Shimla, January 8

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh here today inaugurated the digital mammography machine in the radiology department of Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital.

Virbhadra said the machine would help detect breast cancer at an early stage. “The machine passes lowest radiation dose to patients and has a high detection rate for cancer,” he added.

The machine has an added facility of 3D tomosynthesis, which detects hidden lesions within the dense breast. The stereotactic biopsy system with this machine will be handy in final tissue diagnosis with nearly 100 per cent accuracy.

The Chief Minister said another digital mammography machine worth Rs 2.4 crore would also be installed at Tanda medical college in Kangra district.

He said the state government was laying emphasis on providing best healthcare to the people.

Virbhadra said: “We are adding upgrading infrastructure and other facilities so that the people are not forced to go out the state for treatment,” he added.

He said the government had opened 100 new health institutions and had filled 550 posts of doctor and 60 posts of specialist in the last three years.

“Three medical colleges are coming up in Chamba, Hamirpur and Mandi with financial assistance of Rs 190 crore each and the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences is coming up in Bilaspur district,” Virbhadra said.
