Kullu, March 27
Abhishek Rai, president, Himalayan Environment Conservation Organisation (HECO), a local NGO, has alleged that muck dumping was going on along the banks of Sarwari near Bhootnath Bridge. He said it constituted violation of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders that prohibit dumping of untreated municipal solid waste (MSW), construction material and sewage into the Beas and its tributaries.
He said he had approached the district administration as the Kullu Deputy Commissioner was chairman of the debris committee. Rai said he had sent various photographs to the administration, alleging that it had failed to impose a fine on offenders and take steps to prevent water pollution.
Rai said he had approached the green tribunal to intervene in the matter and impose penalty on defaulters. Mud and garbage could be seen dotted along the river. “Authorities are not bothered about water pollution”, he added adding that the damage would be beyond repair if immediate steps were not taken at the earliest.
