Dispose of pending cases soon: DC

Sirmaur Deputy Commissioner Lalit Jain on Wednesday directed the public prosecutors to ensure early disposal of pending cases registered under the Schedule Caste Schedule Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, in the district to deliver justice to the aggrieved.

Presiding over the district-level vigilance and monitoring committee meeting, he said as many as 49 cases had been registered in the district from 2015 to 2018 under the Act, of which 26 cases were pending in the court.

He said 11 cases had been dismissed in the absence of evidence, of which an accused was acquitted for lack of evidence in one of the cases. In four other cases the police could not find evidence pertaining to violation of the Act, while the remaining six cases were pending for investigation.

The DC also directed the police officials to ensure proper investigation of the cases registered under the Act so that the aggrieved could be given financial assistance.

He said a few cases had come to light where the absence of relevant sections of the law had deprived the aggrieved of financial assistance.

He also directed the officials of the Irrigation and Public Health Department to inquire into the complaints received from the residents of the harijan habitation at Manva village in the Chhaya Sanaura gram panchayat regarding unavailability of drinking water over some dispute.

He said the officials should ensure availability of adequate water to the families belonging to the SC community.

The DC said around 32 persons were disbursed relief of Rs 21 lakh in the last three years under the Act.

He said awareness campaigns would be organised in the rural areas to eliminate society of social evils like child marriage and caste-based discrimination.

He urged the members of the committee to inform the district administration, police and the Welfare Department about any such case so that victim could be extended assistance.
