Check dams are the most effective method for water conservation and the state government should give more emphasis on constructing such dams, besides revival of dried-up water sources. This was stated by Governor Acharya Devvrat.

Speaking at a function organised by Government Degree College, Sanjauli, in collaboration with the Sadguru Education and Welfare Association (SEWA) on the theme of “Bharat Ki Jal Sanskriti” here today, he said check dams had proved to be very successful in checking the flow of water, besides soil erosion and ensuring flood control.

He said this technique would go a long way in increasing groundwater level and environment conservation. He exhorted NGOs and commoners to come forward to supplement the efforts of the government.

The Governor expressed satisfaction that the state government had taken effective steps for water conservation and people were aware of their responsibility. He also appealed to the teaching community to spread awareness about water conservation among their students. A book titled, “Natakkar Daya Prakash Sinha”, authored by Dr Harsha Trivedi, was also released on the occasion.

Himachal Pradesh University Vice-Chancellor ADN Bajpai said the figures of scientific mapping on decreasing water level were alarming and global warming was posing a threat. He emphasised the need for taking effective measures for water conservation.

In his research paper based on the survey of 32 panchayats and 116 villages in Ghumarvin in Bilaspur district, Dr Joginder Saklani of HPU said there was no dearth of natural water resources in the area but the unclean environment near the water sources has polluted the water which is not fit for drinking.

Highlighting the efforts of the Sanskar Society, Ghumarwin, to help in water conservation and launch a massive drive to clean areas near wells, he called for government intervention in making the water sources clean and hygienic.

Prof Abhiraj Rajender Mishra, former Vice-Chancellor of Sampoorananand Sanskrit University, Varanasi, also spoke on the occasion.
