Learning level of students evaluated at Red Cross fair

For the first time, learning levels were evaluated in an unconventional manner during the two-day district-level Red Cross fair that concluded at Theog, 32 km from here, today.

The initiative evoked an overwhelming response with over 110 students walking towards an education corner set up to judge the learning levels of students of classes III to VIII.

“More than 80 per cent students could easily read alphabets, words, sentences and short stories,” said Neeraj, the evaluation coordinator. He said in mathematics, the students could easily do addition and subtraction.

Abhay, a Class VII student of a government school, said the test was fun. “There was no pressure and I was at ease while answering questions,” he said.

“We learnt about the learning levels of our children and were handed their progress report,” said Sunita Verma, whose daughter is in Class V.

Officials of the district administration walked out of the offices and offered a platform to the students.

Shimla DC Rohan Chand Thakur, the brain behind the initiative, said the improvement in the learning levels was witnessed.

The students were provided reading and writing material for judging their reading abilities in Hindi and English.

The levels were judgedfrom recognising alphabets in Hindi and English, reading words, making sentences and reading complex paragraphs.

The evaluation was done through oral and written questions to ascertain whether the students had attained comprehensive learning levels.
