Despite repeated instructions from Medical Council of India (MCI) authorities Dr Radhakrishanan Medical College and Hospital (DRMCH) has failed to fulfil the requirements to begin classes at the college.

It is learnt reliably that the MCI officials, who inspected the arrangements, were not satisfied with the facilities provided to run the college.

The government had assured the people of the area that the medical college would become functional from this session. Sources revealed that health department authorities were keen on starting classes from July 31 this year.

A major issue that cropped up was insufficient staff at the college. Even the staff available has been shifted from other medical institutions in the state.

It is learnt that over 12 tutors appointed to teach trainee doctors are non-MBBS. The MCI team also observed the condition of the hospital wards and inspected the civic amenities available for the patients and hospital staff.

At certain places dampness on the walls and poor sanitation was pointed out by the members of the MCI team.

BS Saha, member of MCI team, said there was improvement in the college as compared to the previous inspection but still a lot more was needed to be done. He said that the first year classes could be initiated with the present facilities but improvement was needed before the next classes were started.
