Kullu, October 4

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha will inaugurate the Air India flight on Kullu-Chandigarh sector tomorrow.

With the introduction of this flight, Kullu town will be connected to Chandigarh as well as Delhi. In a statement issued here today Nadda said that since the hill state is a major tourist destination with lots of foreign tourists thronging the state, it is very important for the state to have a robust state-of-the-art air connectivity. Nadda mentioned that adequate connectivity and affordable airfare are two critical issues confronting aviation sector effectiveness in Himachal Pradesh.

Lok Sabha MP Ram Swaroop Sharma, MLA Kullu Maheshwar Singh, MLA Manali Govind Singh Thakur, MLA Manali, chairman, Nagar Panchayat, Bhuntar Karan Singh will also be present on the occasion.

After trial flight Air India is slated to resume a regular flight soon. Kullu Air India station manager Dinesh Bhardwaj said that regular operations to Chandigarh will commence from October 9 after getting various approvals.

Dinesh said that earlier the operations were scheduled to commence from September 26 but were delayed due to pendency of technical approvals. He said tickets would be available online soon. The operations would be carried out using the same 70 seater ATR-72 aircraft that is presently operating between Kullu and Delhi.

The flight from Delhi would arrive at Kullu at 08:05 am and then depart for Chandigarh at 08:35 am. The flight would arrive in Chandigarh at 09:20 am and then return back to Kullu at 09:50 am. The duration of the flight would be of 45 minutes. The return flight to Delhi will be at 11:05 am.

While Air India charges hefty fares up to over Rs 18,500 for one-way travel from Kullu to Delhi, the lowest fares to Chandigarh would reportedly be around Rs 4,000. Travel agents here said that this would provide another option to travel economically by air from Kullu.

Aviations experts stated that earlier scheduled airline Vayudoot used to undertake operations to Chandigarh but they ceased those operations in early nineties. After that no scheduled air carrier operated between Chandigarh and Kullu and hence there was no regular air connectivity with Chandigarh for over past two decades.

Non-scheduled airline Air Himalayas, a Manali based private company, operated flights between Chandigarh and Kullu for three years during summer season for around two months beginning 2014. However, the company did not carry out air operations this year.

Air connectivity between Kullu and Chandigarh has been a long pending demand of the residents and tourists. The beneficiaries associated with tourism industry stated that increased air traffic to this valley will boost the economy of the region and promote the tourism industry.
