Chamba, April 19
The Department of Posts has dismissed a postman in Chamba district who was accused of embezzling people’s funds amounting to Rs 32 lakh.
The embezzlement came to light in Masroond post office branch last month, following which, the postman was suspended pending an internal investigation.
As per the allegations, the postman had been withholding customers’ money for an extended period of time instead of depositing it into their accounts.
The irregularity came to light when the customers noticed discrepancies in their account balance.
When confronted by the customers, he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, prompting the customers to complain to the Postal Superintendent.
The Department initiated a thorough inquiry into the matter, scrutinising all transactions and accounts under the purview of the Masroond branch.
During the investigation, evidence of the postman’s malfeasance surfaced, leading to his suspension and subsequent dismissal.
The case was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a further probe.
Meanwhile, the Department of Posts has taken steps to reimburse the affected customers for their losses.
Department of Posts Superintendent Sanjay Kumar confirmed the dismissal of the postman involved in the embezzlement. He said the Central Bureau of Investigation is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences of fraud within the Department.
The swift and decisive by the Department underscored its commitment to upholding integrity and accountability in its operations, he said.
