Workers of the Shongtong-Karcham hydropower project today met Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh seeking police protection against the intimidation and threats being issued to them by CITU activists.
The delegation led by Kinnaur MLA and Deputy Speaker Jagat Singh Negi apprised the Chief Minister of the situation. “They urged the CM to put an end to the atmosphere of fear and unrest,” said Negi.
The delegation pointed out that more than 250 persons from Kinnaur and other parts of Himachal had got gainful employment and the CITU members were trying to intimidate everyone and mislead the public.
Those in the delegation included people from villages of Powari, Barang, Kalpa, Khoti and Khangi. “There are 36 FIRs against the CITU activists and the workers want an end to the unrest,” said Negi. He added that since the terminated workers had moved the High Court and the matter was also pending in the labour court, the law should be allowed to take its own course. Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Tikender Panwar today wrote a letter to Chief Secretary VC Pharka seeking termination of the services of a retired general manager still working on the project .
