Shimla, June 23

The local railway station will be refurbished to give it an old-world charm look, nostalgic of the British Raj.

Railway Minister Piyush Goel on Saturday visited the railway station and took a ride in the steam engine till Summer Hill and back, accompanied by his wife. He inspected the reservation office and took a round of the station. He left the station in the train at 12.15 pm and returned at 1.45, after taking the 18 km, to and fro ride.

He directed the Railways officials to prepare a project so that the station could be restored to the way it looked prior to Independence. He assured of no shortage of funds for the work. The minister saw the photo exhibition on the heritage track and directed the officials to further improve it.

The Shimla-Kalka rail line which has been bestowed with the UNESCO World Heritage status, attracts a large number of tourists, especially British, who come here in search of homes and other places associated with their ancestors, who had served here during the British rule.

Goel, who was here on a private visit and directed the officials to keep it a secret, was accompanied by Divisional Railways Manager DC Sharma from Ambala and other local officials.
