Snow, rain lash state, more in offing, says Met

SHIMLA: Wintry conditions returned in the higher hills and tribal areas as moderate snow occurred at some places while mid and lower hills received widespread rain. Keylong and Gondla recorded 4 cm and 3 cm of snow while the Rohtang Pass was covered under 10-cm thick layer of snow.

Wintry conditions returned in the higher hills and tribal areas as moderate snow occurred at some places while mid and lower hills received widespread rain. Keylong and Gondla recorded 4 cm and 3 cm of snow while the Rohtang Pass was covered under 10-cm thick layer of snow. 

The minimum and maximum temperatures dipped to 2.9°C and 3.5°C at Keylong while the high altitude tribal areas reeled under sub zero temperature. 

Keylong, which also recorded 23 mm rain, was the wettest in the region while Kukumseri, Salooni, Bharmaur and Chamba had 19 mm, 18 mm, 16 mm and 14 mm rain, followed by Kalpa and Gohar 13 mm, Bharmaur 12 mm, Pooh and Dalhousie 10 mm, Bhuntar 8 mm and Shimla, Manali, Rekong Peo and Bhuntar 7 mm.

The local MeT office has warned of thunderstorm accompanied by squall and hailstorm in the mid hills on Tuesday and predicted rain and thundershowers at many places in the lower and mid hills and rain or snow at isolated places in the higher hills over the next two days and dry weather in the region from May 10 to 12.

Kullu Deputy Commissioner Yunus Khan has asked residents and tourists to take precautions and not to venture in high hills in the wake of the warning of thunderstorm, hail and squall issued by the Meteorological Department for Kullu district from May 7 to 11.

The night temperatures dipped by a few degrees and Keylong recorded a low of 2.9°C, followed by Kalpa 5.4°C, Manali 5.8 °C, Shimla 11.2 °C, Bhuntar 13.4 °C, Solan 14 °C, Palampur 14.5 °C, Sundernagar 15.6 °C, Dharamsala 16.2 °C, Nahan 17.5 °C and Una 20.0 °C. The day temperatures rose marginally in foothills and lower hills and Una was the hottest with a high of 38.8°C while Nahan and Sundernagar recorded maximum temperatures at 33.2 °C and 31.4 °C, followed by Solan 29 °C, Dharamsala 27.2 °C, Shimla 24.4 °C, Kalpa 10.4 °C and Keylong 3.5 °C.

Five rescued from Rohtang

The Mandi police rescued five persons from the Rohtang Pass on Monday. They were stranded because of fresh snowfall. They were travelling from Lahaul side to Manali in a vehicle. Two were the native of Madhya Pradesh and three were from Pangi in Chamba district, said SP, Kullu, Shalini Agnihotri.
