Notwithstanding the legal and political woes that he faced through the year, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today said he was not the kind of person to be bogged down by difficulties as life, especially in politics, throws a new challenge every day.

“I have no regrets whatsoever in life as I have received so much love and affection from the people of Himachal for which I will remain indebted to them,” he said as he celebrates his 84th birthday today. Well wishers and loyalists made a beeline to his residence “Holly Lodge” to greet him. The good wishes continued to pour in throughout the day.

“Have you ever read about great men in history not facing struggle and obstacles in life? Those who live a life of ease fail to find mention in the list of great men,” he remarked. He added that he had emerged wiser as he had learnt from the difficult times in life.

“Politics is always full of challenges like any sport, be it cricket or hockey which one takes in his stride. It is the love of the people of Himachal for me which has always helped in overcome all hurdles,” he said when asked about an eventful year which compounded his legal and political troubles. On the question whether he would contest the next Assembly election, he said he was open to the idea if the party high command wanted him to.

“I have never bothered about political rivals. I am a positive man and I think positively. I don’t have any ill will for my rivals. Politics is not a game but a serious exercise, especially when we go to the elections,” he said, elaborating on his political life, spanning almost six decades.

“I am writing a book but it will be published once I retire from politics. I don’t want to hurt anyone’s sentiments because there will be many sweet and bitter memories in that book,” he said.

Virbhadra cut the cake in the presence of his wife and former MP Pratibha Singh and his son Vikramaditya Singh. He also joined the supporters in the traditional folk dance “nati” that was being performed by his supporters.
