Drive against drug

Meanwhile, DGP Sita Ram Mardi on Sunday said the state government had launched a comprehensive destruction campaign against the cultivation of poppy in all districts through the panchayats, so that the crop was destroyed before it matured by the end of June.

Mardi said all revenue officials, forest officials and the elected representatives of the Panchayati Raj Bodies and Urban Local Bodies were duty bound under Section 47 of the NDPS Act, 1985, to inform the police about illegal cultivation of cannabis and opium poppy in their respective jurisdiction.

They will give information in writing to the SHO and the SP concerned. The forest officials will have to patrol in their respective jurisdiction and report illegal cultivation to the police.

A joint campaign will be launched thereafter to destroy cultivation by involving all stakeholders, enforcement agencies such as police, NCB, SNCB, CID and Forests, Revenue, Punchayati Raj and Rural Development Departments.

These agencies will submit a progress report on poppy, opium and cannabis destruction before August 15, 2018.
