Jalandhar, June 24

The police have removed around 12 rehris from the Model Town market here. Owing to the problems occurring while managing the traffic, the Division 6 police have acted strictly against the rehris and kiosks on pavements.

Handcarts and rehris not only lead to traffic chaos, but also cause problems in the smooth movement of pedestrians in the busy market of the city.

These rehris were plying in busy areas such as Nikku Park, Bread Market road, Masand Chowk, Chunmun Mall, Goal Market and Meena Bazaar hence, blocking many paths. Once a handcart selling snacks, vegetables or fruits enters the narrow alleys of the city, it becomes almost impossible for a motorist to negotiate his or her way through the lane, said commuters.

The police said such actions would continue in future also. The police also received complaints from some of the shopkeepers that miscreants by using such rehris keep an eye on their shops. Hence, the police, led by Division Officer-in-charge Omkar Singh Brar, removed several vendors from the market. He also urged the vendors to not to put rehris illegally in the area otherwise strict action would be taken against them.

Meanwhile residents, who were earlier demanding a systematic positioning of vendors, especially on weekends, applauded the police action.

Manisha Garg, a resident of  the area, said rehris cause problems for pedestrians.

“On the one hand, footpaths in the city are occupied by extended encroachments by shops, these carts on roads leave no space for the pedestrians to walk,” she said.

Gagandeep Singh, a commuter, said vendors create disturbance in the traffic flow and pose a threat to commuters. Hence, their relocation was theneed of the hour.

The vendors said: “Every month they are issued a hefty challan but still they are not allotted proper spaces to sell their items.”
