As many as 40 PhD, 66 postgraduate and 76 graduate students were awarded degrees during the 12th annual convocation of Punjab Technical University (PTU).

The chief guest on the occasion was renowned entrepreneur Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman and group CEO of Bharti Enterprises. He also delivered the convocation address. Sunil Kant Munjal, joint managing director, Hero MotoCorp, and the chairman of the board of governors, PTU, presided over the event.

Sunil Bharti Mittal was awarded the doctorate degree for outstanding contribution to the technology building.

In his address, Mittal shared the tale of his success and stressed on the introduction of new technology. “I am honoured to be the part of the convocation. I am the son of soil who belongs to Ludhiana. I started with a small bicycle unit and a few other businesses after graduation and the rest is the history. What you need is fresh ideas. The students who are receiving degrees today are pillars of the nation. You just need to step out of your comfort zone,” he said.

Mittal added, “We need to ensure that citizens avail of the basic facilities and the technology can play a vital role in achieving the target. In India, there are about 85,000 branches of various banks and this number is sufficient to compete with other developed nations. If the future generation is provided all required facilities, then I’m sure that in future the country will be known as global India. PTU is on the right track and I am pleased to know that the students here are given the facilities that are essential for the growth of the country.”

Sunil Kant Munjal said, “The university is in its teenage and its responsibilities are increasing. I believe that it will fulfill its duties effectively. The pass-out students will build the nation with their innovative ideas and dedication.”

Dr Rajneesh Arora, Vice-Chancellor, PTU, spoke about about his vision of turning Punjab into a hub for higher education.

Dr Arora said, “In 2015, our 15 university students will reach the Mount Everest and in year 2017, a group of 10 girl students will be taken to the Everest. We are in high spirits as in 2020, our students will take part in a Mount Everest expedition in collaboration with students of international universities.”
