As many as 73.16 percent votes were polled across the nine constituencies in Jalandhar today.

The DC lauded various parties for the peaceful polls conducted across the district. While the Deputy Commissioner-cum-DEO visited various constituencies looking into polling booth arrangements, Deputy Commissioner General (Gurmeet Singh), ADC Girish Dayalan and MC Commissioner Gupreet Khehra also visited various polling booths and stations.

In all, there were 1,833 polling booths had been set up in the district.

Poll percentage falls

Despite much activity done by the Jalandhar administration under the ECI’s Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, the poll percentage for the nine Assembly segments of Jalandhar dropped from 75.5 per cent in 2012 to 73.16 per cent this time.

It dropped significantly even in the four Assembly segments of Kapurthala, not touching 80 per cent mark anywhere this time.

Though long queues were seen at many polling booths, including the Jalandhar Central Assembly segment, the poll percentage remained the lowest at 67.7 only.

Nakodar saw the highest polling among nine Jalandhar constituencies at 77.34.

Sultanpur Lodhi saw the highest turnout of 78 among four segments of Kapurthala.

The administration had roped in cricketer Harbhajan Singh as the brand ambassador, who promoted voting even today going to the polling booth with his mother Avtar Kaur.

The administration is yet to add up service votes and postal ballot papers too to the numbers, which will eventually increasing polling slightly.
