Jalandhar, April 25

Former Union Minister for Law and Justice and ex-MP, Rajya Sabha, Ashwani Kumar visited Lovely Professional University today and interacted with students.

Dr Ashwani also launched his second book ‘Hope in a Challenged Democracy – An Indian Narrative’ on the occasion. He also shared his experience as a minister, MP, governor, CBI director, IPS officer, politician, policy-maker, the youngest Additional Solicitor General of India, senior advocate of the Supreme Court, a visitor to 30 countries under the Indian Mission, and a great lover of sports, particularly wrestling and table tennis, with the students.

Addressing the students, Dr Ashwani said: “It was my heartfelt desire to launch this book amid great diversity and larger number of students on the LPU campus so that the message contained in it should reach all places across the country and also abroad. In the book, I have spoken about important issues concerning democracy. I want to affirm all leaders that we must civilise ourselves in the use of power. To strengthen democracy, we must raise right kind of leadership so that we may have only those leaders who come forward to serve in true sense, instead of making fake commitments and assurances. I feel, no doubt we have progressed economically but we are down socially.”

At this juncture, he was pointing towards the wicked war of words among top leaders during the elections, which deviates from the prevalent problems and issues.

Dr Ashwani said: “We should work together to uplift our democracy so that we may have leaders who are far-sighted, determined, able, and soft-spoken.”

Dr Ashwani’s book has been critically appreciated by Karan Billimoria, member, House of Lords, UK, and other international and national leaders. The book pertains to his works as a lawyer and in politics, and it centers on constitutionalism. Earlier, he has authored a book titled, ‘Law, Ideas and Ideology in Politics; Perspectives of an Activist’, in 2003.
