The Congress has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the rebel party workers to either support the party candidates in the ongoing municipal polls or face suspension for at least six years.

Informing this, Congress district president Daljit Singh Ahluwalia said he had sent teams to various wards to identify the rebel party workers supporting the candidates from opposite parties.

“Presently, we are facing the maximum problem from the west and central constituencies. We are making a list of such party workers and will send it to the party high command on Wednesday to initiate the suspension process,” said Ahluwalia.

He also said that since the party was in power in Punjab, the party workers must forget personal gains and work together to ensure win of the party in the municipal elections as well.

The Congress MLAs have sought support from various groups during the Assembly elections and assured them tickets in the municipal polls.

It is mainly due to this that the Congress government had to introduce a new delimitation plan to increase the number of wards even though there was no increase in the municipal limit and also no even distribution of the population in the newly constituted wards.

This has perturbed the potential party workers and hopeful candidates so much that while some had announced to contest as independent candidates, others had silently offered support to the opposition party candidates.
