Drugs case: 2 get 10-year RI

HOSHIARPUR: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Ranjit Kumar Jain convicted two persons accused of smuggling banned drugs and sentenced them to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Ranjit Kumar Jain convicted two persons accused of smuggling banned drugs and sentenced them to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each. On the non-payment of the fine, they would have to undergo an additional imprisonment of one year.

The Sadar police had laid nakas on the road near Shergarh bypass on September 15, 2014. During this time, at around seven o’clock in the evening, a white Indigo car was indicated to stop. One person from the car ran away, but the driver was nabbed who was identified as Surjit Singh. The other one was identified as Jagpreet Singh alias Jaggi resident of Mohalla Dharmapura Ludhiana.

The police recovered two sacks from the vehicle. A huge amount of banned drugs was recovered from the two sacks.

A case under the NDPS Act was also registered against the two. On Wednesday, the court convicted both of them, and sentenced them to 10-year imprisonment.
