A 35-year-old Jalandhar born Dr Mohit Kapoor has brought laurels to the city after he was honoured amongst the six best authors in basic sciences by a panel of global reviewers at the 16th Annual European Congress of Rheumatology held this year.

Dr Kapoor is the head of cartilage biology research department at the Toronto Western Research Institute in Canada and i leading the research on new therapeutic strategies to stop and delay the process of cartilage destruction amongst human beings.

“Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and an age-related degenerative joint disease that almost affects everybody in old age. There is no proper cure for this disease so far. The therapies available presently are only partly successful and are only limited to decrease its symptoms,” said Dr Kapoor. He said, “The specific biological factors underlying its genesis are poorly understood, which has limited the development of effective disease modifying therapies.” “The major cause of increasing osteoarthritis is that its gets overlooked both by the patient and the doctors in its initial stage. Whenever one feels pain in the joint, the doctors advise him to get an X-ray done. We at the research centre always suggest an MRI scan as only it can detect the change in the structural pattern of bones in case of Osteoarthritis,” said Dr Kapoor. “Instead of the traditional three meals a day, one should take five small meals at regular interval just to keep the metabolism moving. Also, one should take omega 3 fatty acids to further prevent the disease,” said Dr Kapoor.
