Phagwara: Five persons were admitted to the local Civil Hospital after being injured in a clash at Manak village in Phagwara on Friday. Supporters of the Congress and the SAD-BJP got involved in the clash to get the credit for the distribution of wheat. It is said that the clash took place in the presence of former minister Joginder Singh Maan and BJP sarpanch Gurdeep Singh Lalli. Turbans of the villagers were tossed during clash. SAD-BJP activists Sarabjit Singh, Mangat Ram, Pardeep Singh, Congress activists Balwinder Singh and Surinder Singh were admitted to the local Civil Hospital. The police have registered a case in this regard. Gurdeep alleged that the Congressmen had grudges against the SAD-BJP after their victory in the elections. OC

Harmony Day celebrated 

Phagwara: To commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Political Science Department of the Kamla Nehru College for Women organised an event to celebrate Harmony Day on the campus on Friday. Various competitions were organised on the occasion. Students also planted saplings to mark the occasion. During the celebrations, various activities like choreography and street plays depicting history of the country and contribution of freedom fighters to the freedom moment were performed. College principal Dr Kiran Walia was the chief guest at the function. The Department of Home Science organised a rangoli competition in which where Kirandeep Kaur of MSc Fashion Design (3rd semester) bagged the first position while Anita of BSc Fashion Design (3rd semester) and Gurvinder of BVoc Fashion Design (3rd semester) jointly got the second position. Sonia of BVoc Fashion Design (3rd semester) and Ramandeep of MCom (3rd semester) jointly bagged the third position. OC

Hospital gets certification 

Jalandhar: Lajwanti Hospital, Jalandhar, has got the membership of the International Excellence Federation for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. Dr Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia from the hospital claimed that a few centres in India had the membership of the federation. He said the certification was given on strict parameters taking into account patients’ safety, results of surgery, data monitoring and long-term follow-up of patients. “This certification also puts responsibility on our shoulders to deliver even better and safe patient care,” said Ahluwalia. He said according to a survey conducted by the Government of India, Punjab has the highest percentage of obese people. “Obesity is classified according to the Body Mass Index, which is calculated using the weight and height.
