The city police today claimed to have busted a gang of robbers and recovered 10 stolen mobile phones and six stolen motor cycles from their possession.
The accused were identified as Manvir Singh, alias Mommy, a resident of Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar, and Jai Bahadar, a resident of Basti Bawa Khel, Jalandhar.
A top police official said at a press conference that recently an anti-snatching team was formed under the supervision of ASI Kulwant Singh and ASI Major Singh. Acting on a tip-off, the police installed a special naka on Cool Road near Model Town. On suspicion, the cops at the naka stopped two bike-borne youths for checking. They were riding the bike without any number plate.
During search of their belongings, three mobile phones were recovered from them.
During preliminary interrogation, the police also recovered seven mobile phones of various brands and five more motorcycles.
The police said 11 criminal cases were registered against them at various police stations in the region in the recent past.
An accused Manvir had been in jail, but he had come out on bail in August 2014, while Jai Bahadar had been convicted for 10 years under the NDPS Act at police division No. 4 in March, 2013, and he had been on a 45-day parole which was ending on Tuesday.
During questioning, the accused told the police that they had committed over a dozen incidents of snatching and looting mobile phones and motorcycles.
The police said now the detail of the recovered motorcycles and mobiles phones were being traced to identify the owner so that the same could be handed over to the owners.
