Jalandhar, July 20
If everything goes as planned by the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ), the use of groundwater will be replaced by surface water present in river beds in the state in the next few years.
The Municipal Commissioner, Dr Basant Garg, said keeping in view of the requirement of water, which is expected to touch around 500 MLD by the year 2050, a site had been identified in the Beas near Miani village of the Dasuya block to take out water for city use.
“According to a survey report, the area has got over 10,000 cusecs of water available and it would be easier to take out around 210 cusecs (around 500 MLD) which will be required by the city everyday in 2050,” said Dr Garg.
He added that with rising population, it was getting difficult to meet the daily water demand of the city through groundwater. Since the Beas is a perennial river, it could be a good source of continuous water supply to city residents and also nearby areas.
