Gursimran Singh Kalra (18), a student of MGN Public School, Urban Estate here, has topped the district in the CBSE Class XII examination with 98.4 per cent marks.

The result of the examination was declared today.

Ambreen Deol (medical stream), a student of Apeejay School Mahavir Marg, and Samarthpreet Singh Randhawa (stream non-medical) of MGN Public School, Adarsh Nagar, secured the second position in the district.

The third position in Jalandhar has jointly been bagged by Muskan Gupta and Tanya Singla of MGN School, Adarsh Nagar, Ratika Sharma (commerce) of Swami Sant Das Public School and Ritik Chopra of Innocent Hearts Public School jointly bagged the fourth position in the district.

Topping both the district and the commerce stream, Gursimran Singh Kalra said he had given his best and was overjoyed with his marks. His father Sukhwant Singh Kalra, who is an astrologer, had indicated that he would do well in the exams. Gursimran, who dreams of becoming a digital entrepreneur, said he studied for two to 18 hours a day depending on the targets he had set for himself.

While Gursimran was the school vice-captain and was also awarded with the Spirit of MGN Award (which is awarded to only two students) and also participated in football and handball contests, he tried his best to relax and regularly indulge in his hobbies when free.

“There was no fixed time for studying, I only put in as much hard work as the deadline I had set for myself on a certain day. I dream of becoming an entrepreneur which requires one to havep a multi-dimensional personality. So I never stressed myself and just focused on meeting targets,” he said.

He said both his father Sukhwant Singh Kalra and mother Balwinder Kaur never put too many restrictions or burden of expectations on him and encouraged him to be at ease in studies.

When asked whom he gave credit for his success, he said, “I don’t believe getting such marks is ever a one-man show. It was like a team that supported me. My parents, grandfather and grandmother and my wonderful teachers supported me solidly. When in doubt, my friends also helped me clear out many of my doubts.”

Music, meditation, sports and music being his key hobbies, Gursimran while giving some precious advice to his juniors, said, “Study well and in an organised manner. The key is to stay calm and composed during the exam. Many friends whom I thought were quite brilliant couldn’t do so well with the actual results because they lost their cool while appearing for the exams.”

Ambreen Deol, a student of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, was so deep into the preparation for her AIIMS entrance test to be held tomorrow that the media had a hard time getting to her today. Fearing she would lose focus in studies, she was not even sent to school with parents, fearing she would be distracted. Later in the day, however, the elusive Ambreen both posed for the shutterbugs and talked.

Ambreen, who had scored 95 per cent marks in her Class X exams, said, “I’m very happy because I wasn’t expecting this result. I hadn’t studied for a good percentage because I was so busy preparing for the entrance. However, this has acted as a morale booster and will help me perform better in exams.”

Ambreen’s mother Dr Navjot Deol in an English lecturer at the Apeejay College of Fine Arts and her father Sandeep Singh Deol is a lawyer in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Known for being a party animal, Ambreen had been banned from attending any parties by her parents six-seven months ago. Ambreen said she was working very hard for her entrance, “I used to study three to four hours a day, sometimes up to 10 to 12 hours a day depending on my stamina.”

Crediting her parents for her success, Ambreen said, “There were moments when I felt de-motivated or could not focus on studies. My parents boosted my morale during that time and helped me so better.”

While she hasn’t chosen the stream in which she wants to pursue medical so far, she says she shall decide after the results come in.

While reading books and music are her hobbies, Ambreen, an avid social networking fan, said she was a regular on Instagram. Giving advice to other students, she said, “Study hard, but don’t stress too much.”

Samarthpreet Singh of MGN Public School, Adarsh Nagar (non-medical stream), said, “I always believe in competing with myself and that’s what I did during these exams. I constantly worked to increase my stamina for studies and increase the hours I gave to it.”

While Samarthpreet’s father Kuljit Singh Randhawa is an engineer with the electricity board, his mother Paramjit Kaur is a staff nurse at the ESI hospital.

Smarthpreet said he never had much interest in the medical stream, “I never liked biology. But I loved mathematics all through and physics was my favourite subject. That is why I naturally wanted to choose non-medical.” Crediting his teachers and parents for being his constant motivation, he said his sister, who is pursuing engineering from the Thapar institute in Patiala, also served as a constant inspiration to him.

Samarthpreet, who aims for IIT Roorkee, plans to go in for the computer stream.

Ratika Sharma in limelight

Ratika Sharma(18), a student of  Swami Sant Dass Public School in Jalandhar, scored 96.6 per cent marks in the commerce stream. While her father Kapil Sharma is a businessman, her mother Ritu Sharma is a a housewife. Ratika, who wants to pursue a job in the management field, said she never studied as per the hours, but only as per the targets set by her.

While she credited her parents, teachers and God for her success, Ratika said during study breaks, she relaxed by playing guitar and listening to the music.
