The three-day Harivallabh Sangeet Pratiyogita, which ushers in the world’s oldest Hindustani classical music sammelan, concluded here at the complex of the Devi Talab Mandir here today.
The reputed contest this year witnessed over 100 students from across several states of the country participating in the “pratiyogita” which showcases classical music talent of students from across the country every year.
Students from Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab, among other states, travelled to the city in the chill of the winter to participate in the contest this year.
The contests held for the past three days witnessed young vocal and instrumental talents from across the country competing for the top slots in both senior and junior categories of the “pratiyogita”. The cold weather did nothing to unfaze the enthusiasm of the participants who participated in big numbers in the contest.
On the last day of the “pratiyogita” today, the senior’s percussion category witnessed the participation of 25 participants.
The contest was won by Kunal Kale and Ritu Raj, both from Maharashtra, who played jhap taal on tabla and dhamaar taal on pakhawaj, respectively. Jasdeep Singh from Ludhiana stood second in the seniors’ percussion category. He played teen taal on tabla. Souptik Kumar Manna from West Bengal stood third in the contest, also playing the jhaptaal on tabla. In the juniors’ classical vocal category, 21 participants performed. Nayanika Nandi from Chattisgarh stood first in the category, Dhruv from Balachaur stood second and Arihant Dev Dharma from Jalandhar stood third.
In the juniors’ percussion category, 23 participants brought forth their myriad talents. The contest was won by Talanjay J Thakur from Patna, who played Pancham Swari on the tabla. Gagandeep Singh from Mohali also playing the Pancham Swari on tabla stood second and Rishabh Kumar from Patna playing Nine Matra Talanjali Taal stood third.
In the juniors’ non-percussion category, six contestants participated. Suhit Rakshit Sharma from Hyderabad stood first playing Raag Jaunpuri on sitar, Harjit Singh from Ludhiana stood second with his sarangi strains regaling the audience with Raag Puriya Dhanashree and Ishwar Singh Panesar from Ludhiana stood third with his Raag Miyan ki Todi performance on the harmonium. The third spot was won jointly by Chaitanya Sharma from Jalandhar who played Raag Bheempalasi on violin.
Meanwhile, in the seniors’ category contests which started yesterday, 24 participants performed for the senior classical vocal category. The first spot was bagged by Satvinder Singh Bodal from Hoshiarpurm who sung Raag Madhuvanti, Tanushree Kashyap from Yamunanagar singing Raag Multani and Arundeep Singh from Mohali singing Raag Jaunpuri, bagged the second spot jointly.
The third spot was won by Prince Sahni from Amritsar who sung raag Malkauns.
In the senior semi-classical category which saw the participation of 18 children, Omkar Gupta from Orissa sang “tappa” in “kafi raag” bagging the top slot. Ajay Tiwari from Anuppur, MP, sang “thumri” in “raag mishra khamaaj” bagging the second spot. Harsharan Deep Singh from Hoshiarpur stood third, singing “thumri” in “raag Sindh Bhairavi”.
The Harivallabh Sangewet Sammelan will begin tomorrow and include performances from Pakistan vocalist Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, sitar and violin jugalbandi by Pt Prateek Chaudhari and Kailash Patra, dhrupad performance by Sanjeev Jha and Manish Kumar and shehnai performance by Hassan Haider Khan and party.
