It’s been more than a year since the work on the road of Vijay Nagar, adjoining Ashok Nagar, lies unfinished.

The long stretch is the main road in Jalandhar, which has now become an eyesore, causing a great inconvenience to area residents and shopkeepers.

The long stretch of the road, right from the approach of Car Bazaar in Vijay Nagar beyond Ashok Nagar, the main road from Adda Basti Sheikh to Gujral Nagar Chowk and main road of Sports Market is laden with gravel and stones.

The road is one-way, with its one side having been completed long ago. The other side had been dug up since last year and is riddled with bumps, with stones scattered on its surface. The two and fro traffic on this road passes from the single completed lane, making it accident prone. No repair work has been executed here for long.

Bacchan Singh, a shopkeeper in the area, said, “Despite repeated complaints and protests regarding the condition of the road, no concrete efforts have been made to solve the problem by the civic authorities so far. The councillor of both areas (Vijay Nagar and Ashok Nagar) had been approached to get the work started but nothing has been done. Many accidents take place, people don’t want to make a stopover on this dusty track. We want the road to be completed at the earliest.”

Another resident of the area said, “The work is lying in the same condition for the past one year. We had protested for the same many times, but no repair work has been done.”

Ward number 37 councillor Jagdish Raja said, “Commuters, residents and shopkeepers face a lot of trouble daily due to the incomplete work. Many a time, I have raised the issue with the Municipal Corporation for the early completion of the work, but the MC authorities are not paying the dues to the assigned contractor. The civic authorities had been ignoring the progress of the area, but I will get the work done soon.”

Mayor Sunil Jyoti, while informing about the action taken on the issue, said, “Commuters face problems and the administration is aware of the conditions which exist on this road. The one side of the road has been done, while the work on the other side is in progress. We will soon complete the remaining work.”

Despite repeated attempts, ward number 49 councillor Kamlesh Grover could not be contacted.
