In the absence of a permanent executive officer and the sanitary inspector, the Nakodar municipal council has failed to follow the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) directions about the removal of garbage from residential areas. The town has been without a permanent executive officer and the sanitary inspector for long.

Due to their absence, garbage is being dumped openly in residential areas by the residents.

The National Green Tribunal had given directions on a plea filed by Nakodar-based environmentalist Gaurav Jain.

The executive officer, Sukhdev Singh Randhawa, holds the charge of Nakodar and Mullanpur while sanitary inspector Darshan Kumar Joshila is holding the charge of Phillaur, Goraya and Nakodar towns.

Gaurav Jain said a private firm was given the contract for the door-to-door garbage collection but it was not working properly.

He said he had met the EO over the issue but no action had been taken. Now, he is planning to approach the NGT again as its directions are not being followed.

Executive officer Sukhdev Singh Randhawa said they were trying their best to follow the directions of the national Green Tribunal. He said he and the sanitary inspector had the charge of other towns, which was hampering the garbage collection drive. “I had raised the issue with the authorities concerned several times and urged them to give me the chrge of only one town but nothing has been done in this regard,” he added.
