LPU student commits suicide

Pardeep Kumar, hailing from Rain Mazara village of Ropar and a BTech student of Lovely Professional University (LPU), reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his hostel room on the LPU campus last night.

Depression was cited as the reason for his taking the extreme step. The police have registered a case and handed over the body to his family members after conducting the post-mortem at the local Civil Hospital.

Two held for drug peddling

The Goraya police have arrested two persons, identified as Nirmal Kaur of Dhaleta village and Manjit Singh of Palakdin village, and recovered 80 gm of intoxicant powder from their possession. Thirty gm of powder was recovered from Nirmal Kaur and 50 gm from Manjit Singh, the police said.

Fire in fields

Wheat stubble kept in fields over 35 acres in Rurrka Kalan and Sangh Dhesian village near Goraya caught fire on Sunday. Fire tenders from Phagwara were called to control the blaze.

Affected farmers Buta Singh, Ajit Singh and others said the stubble was left in the fields because they wanted to prepare dry fodder for their cattle. The affected farmers demanded compensation from the authorities.
