An artist, a writer and an aspiring radio jockey (RJ), all at the age of 19, Jivesh Rampal, like many of his generation, believes in living the dream. Working on his dream, Jivesh released his book ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani, in association with Punjab Arts Council. His book is a fiction romantic novel that gives an insight of different facets of life of today’s youth and their love relationships.

Addressing the media at the Press Club, Jalandhar, Jivesh said, “Though I never thought I would be able to write this book one day, my passion for reading has made it possible and I have actually poured my dreams into words in this book.”

Here are some excerpts from his interview.

When and why did you decide to write a book?

As I said, I am fond of reading books and writing short stories, one day while writing a short story, I realised this same story could be stretched and given a different plot, while that same moment another idea struck my mind. The story in my book is the amalgamation of different ideas. I started writing this book last year and it took me eight months to write it, he said.

Your experience of the process of writing

It was an amazing experience. I learnt a lot during this time. I studies in a convent school,I was not well-versed in Hindi but still I chose to write this novel in Hindi which was a big challenge but all in all writing enhanced my creativity and also improved my vocabulary in Hindi.

Is writing cathartic?

We can say that writing is a cathartic experience to some extent. It allows the writer to pen down what he thinks about himself or others in form of the characters of the story.

How difficult was it for you to write the book at the age of 19?

At the age of 19, it was a bit difficult for me to write this book and manage both my studies and writing this book. I utilised all my holidays for this, I stopped using cell phone and even during night when everyone in my home slept, I used to work on my book for hours.

Is there any space for books in this era of social media?

I do believe that somewhere or the other there is a place for books in this era of social media. Books are something that inspire others, something that the people can preserve. Pen is mightier than the sword. Words have a great power to influence and change. Change is an integral part for living. I agree that the social media has replaced books, but a huge chunk of our population still reads books that inspire them to do wonders.

To whom do you owe your achievement?

All the credit goes to my friends, who have actually motivated me to write at the time when I was all shattered and losing hope that I could not write anymore. Even a few characters of my story are inspired by the real life characters of my friends.
