Manpreet Kaur, a girl belonging to rural area of Nawanshahr, daughter of a labourer is fulfilling the responsibility of nurturing her family comprising six siblings.

Manpreet has completed course in food and beverages. Now, she is working as a Brew Master (L1) at a prominent cafeteria chain at Ludhiana.

She had got the opportunity provided by the urban centre of Punjab Skill Development Mission that is being run at Nawanshahr.

Two years ago, she got herself enrolled for a nine month course in food and beverages. This course was especially designed for children of building and other construction workers.

She said she wanted to help her father to run family affairs. Being eldest daughter of the family, she understood her responsibilities and committed to hone her skills for getting a good job.

Manpreet said at that time, the Punjab Skill Development Mission showed her way to become self reliant and now she had been working hard to shape the future of her younger sisters.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Davinder Singh said there were two PSDM centers in working, one at urban area, Nawanshahr and other at rural area, Usmanpur. Three more rural centres would be functional in the coming days at Mukandpur, Saroya and Dusanjh Khurd.

Mainly these centres enroll youth in the age group of 18-35 years having passed Class XII examination. Now, two new courses, Elder Care Taker and Counter Sales Executive have also been introduced at Nawanshahr urban centre under “Prime Minister Kaushal Vikas Scheme”.

The ADC said a total of 240 candidates would be trained in four batches of three months duration. Earlier, at Usmanpur centre 93 candidates had been trained in retail and telecom sector and 25 of them working in Wallmart, KFC, Mc D and Dominos and 22 with SMD and Dr IT.

Similarly, 21 out of total 32 candidates who had opted for food and beverages course under “National Urban Livelihood Mission” are also working with local venders and earning handsome salary.

The ADC said to enhance soft skills in English speaking an English speaking course had also been started here.
