Mother, son booked for domestic violence

PHAGWARA: The local police have booked a man and his mother after his wife lodged a domestic violence complaint against them.

The local police have booked a man and his mother after his wife lodged a domestic violence complaint against them. The accused have been identified as Rajeev Chauhan, a resident of Jalandhar; and his mother Urmila Chauhan.

Complainant Ridhima, a resident of Phagwara, told the police that her husband and his mother tortured her physically and mentally for fulfilling their demand for Rs 40 lakh.

A case under Sections 498-A and 406 of the IPC has been registered against the accused.

Gurmeet Singh Sidhu, SHO, City police station, said, “The complainant told the police that she was married to Rajeev Chauhan on December 1, 2008. She said her in-laws wanted her to conceive early as they had a wish of a son. She gave birth to two baby boys on March 26, 2011, and on April 17, 2015. According to the complainant, she was forced to abort on November 29, 2012, and on June 29, 2013. In her complaint, she said the abortions were done in two Jalandhar-based hospitals after conducting sex determination tests in Dehradun.”

The complainant said she had lodged a complaint with the Kapurthala SSP who forwarded it to the Women Cell. She said the cell did not take any action on her complaint. Later, she moved a family court, which ordered registration of a case against her husband and mother-in-law, she added.
