Jalandhar, April 22

In gross violation of traffic rules, Jalandhar Member of Parliament (MP) Santokh Chaudhary and other Congress MLAs did not wear helmets in a motorcycle rally here on Sunday.

The rally was taken out to create awareness about female foeticide and water conservation in the city.

The rally “Dheeyan Bachao, paani bachao” was organised by the Congress Party. MP Chaudhary, accompanied by Congress MLA Rajinder Beri and Sushil Rinku, too reached the spot to flag off the rally.

However, on seeing media, all senior leaders sat on the motorcycles and began to drive around the city. They, perhaps, forgot to wear helmets. Following in their footsteps, over dozens of youths too did not wear helmets and began to click selfies on motorcycles.

Some youths even did triple riding and some were found to have done stunts while riding the mobikes.

When asked, Chaudhary Santokh said he only rode the motorcycle in a symbolic way. “I just rode the mobike in a symbolic way. As I did not have helmet, I could not drive down the entire route. We had to stop the rally in-between, as none of the volunteers was carrying helmets,” said Chaudhary.

He later added that only those who would bring helmet would be allowed to participate in the rally.

Meanwhile, the role of the police too was found nothing less than the comedy of errors. While the cops deployed at the venue were “respectfully” escorting the “high-profile” dignitaries, none of them could gather courage to stop them in-between and ask them to wear helmets.
