NHRC rapporteur visits Kapurthala jail

JALANDHAR: Sudhir Kumar, Special Rapporteur, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for the North-East Zone today visited the Kapurthala Modern Jail and took stock of the conditions pertaining to the adoption of destitute children and also to assess the implementation of schemes for the welfare of women and children inside the prisons.

Jalandhar, April 26

Sudhir Kumar, Special Rapporteur, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for the North-East Zone today visited the Kapurthala Modern Jail and took stock of the conditions pertaining to the adoption of destitute children and also to assess the implementation of schemes for the welfare of women and children inside the prisons.

Besides visiting the women in jail, Kumar also checked the living conditions inside the men’s barracks. Later, he visited the langar hall and inspected the food. He also visited the jail school and the hospital.

During the visit, Kumar highlighted the need for a full-fledged pathology lab inside the jail premises. He also recommended a full-time psychologist for the over 2,200 jail inmates.

Jail Superintendent Surinder Pal Khanna informed that the recommendations made by the rapporteur would be sent to the state government for necessary action.

Besides visiting Kapurthala Jail, Kumar will also be visiting jails in Chandigarh, Ropar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana and Nawanshahr.

Besides the jails, he will also visit old age homes, homes for the juvenile, Ujjawala homes and adoption homes recognized by the Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA).
