Posing a tough challenge to the ongoing Swachh Bharat Sarvekshan in the city, over 4,000 employees of the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ) have threatened to go on strike if their salaries were not released within two days.

“We will not collect or lift any garbage. Also, we will not clean any sewerage. The administrative staff too has joined us in the protest as they too did not get any salary this month,” said Chandan Grewal, president of Punjab Safai Karamchari Union Jalandhar.

The union has threatened to announce the strike after having a tussle with the Congress MLA Pargat Singh and Bawa Henry on Wednesday.

The staff rounded them outside the Mayor’s office and demanded to get their salaries released.

Though officials have claimed that the salaries will be released by March 5, the employees have refused to take the claim as earlier also the government failed to release their salaries.

MLA Pargat Singh is ‘Dal Badlu’: MC union workers

Slamming Pargat Singh, Congress MLA from cantonment who had quit Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to join congress and calling him a turncoat, the union workers of the MCJ who held protest against city MLAs against non-payment of salaries called former a ‘Dal Badlu’ ( one who changes party for his or her own interest).

“Pargat Singh earlier was the MLA from the previous Siromani Akali Dal (SAD) government left no occasion to criticise Congress but now sits among them,” said Chandan Grewal.

The union workers and city MLA Bawa Henry (north MLA), Rajinder Beri (central) and Pargat Singh (cantonment) exchanged heated words with the union workers who were not getting salaries.

Sushil Kumar Rinku (west) made no comments after all the MLAs were confronted by union workers.

“Earlier, we (union workers) had thought of halting the work of north and cantonment segment from today onwards but in the interest of public, we decided against it,” Grewal added.

Union workers, however, said they had started their agitation against the city MLAs.
