NRI Harvinder Singh, who is a native of Nangal Fateh Khan village in Jalandhar, was attacked by miscreants on Sunday.

The incident occurred when he, along with his father relatives, was going to a gurdwara in Jahankhelan village in Hoshiarpur district to pay obeisance before his wedding, which was to be solemnised on Sunday.

When he was going to the gurdwara in Jahankhelan village, about 12 persons in two cars started chasing his car and stopped him near the gurdwara. They pulled him out of the car and beat him mercilessly. Sources said one of the attackers kept threatening the persons accompanying Harvinder to stay away from him at gunpoint, while the rest of them kept beating him. His both legs were broken in the attack. They also broke a windowpane of the vehicle and fled the spot. The relatives of the victim took him to the local Civil Hospital.

On the complaint of the victim, the police have registered a case against unidentified persons.

After the death of his first wife he got married with another woman. Later, he divorced her.

Harvinder, in the statement given to the police, has stated that the attack could have been carried out at the behest of family members of his first wife. The police were investigating the case. The NRI had come to India around 15 days ago from California, USA, for marrying a girl from near Saila Khurd in Hoshiarpur district. Both parties were reportedly agreed to solemnise the marriage despite his injuries. However, later, after a mutual consent, the next date for marriage was postponed for July 15.

Later, the police reached the hospital and recorded the victim’s statement.

As per SHO Rajesh Arora, Harvinder was working as a truck driver in California. He has a son and a daughter from the first marriage. In 2006, his first wife had committed suicide in California. Harvinder had alleged that the family members of his first wife considered him responsible for her suicide, which led to the attack. He alleged that they might be behind the attack as they used to threaten him that they would not let him live peacefully.
