The Punjab Parents Association in Jalandhar today submitted a memorandum of demands to the Deputy Commissioner, seeking action against a private school that had allegedly withheld the results of hundreds of students. Parents held a protest against the school for hiking fees and annual charges.

Speaking to Jalandhar Tribune, Kamaljit Singh, association president, said the students had been waiting for their results that had been withheld by the school even though the parents had paid the stipulated fees.

“The DC marked the memorandum to the DEO (Secondary) on the spot and instructed him to hold an inquiry on the issue to take appropriate action,” said Kamaljit.

He said private schools that had imposed higher fee structure on the parents should withdraw this immediately.

He said the High Court had restricted private schools from imposing annual charges and other such charges. However, such things had been going unchecked.

“Despite laws, private schools have been asking the parents to buy sub-standard books and useless uniforms that should be stopped,” he added.

He demanded that the salary of private school teachers should be at par with government teachers.

“Quality education should be provided at government schools and make it affordable,” he added.

They said those district education officials who had failed to take action against the private schools violating the rules should not go scot-free.
