Tension defused

Communal tension prevailed in the Kaulsar locality in Phagwara when Dalit activists of Ambedkar Sena Mool Niwasi and Guru Ravi Dass Tiger Force protested against the construction of a water tank in Dr Ambedkar Park by the Municipal Corporation on Monday evening. Protesters held demonstrations and raised slogans against the MC and the Phagwara police. The dharna was lifted after the intervention of the police. The MC employees were forced to return without starting the work.

Action on tobacco sale

The Health Department is now acting tough with violators as 32 challans have been issued for illegally selling and publicising banned tobacco products and smoking in public places under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) during two raids in Phagwara recently. This was stated by Civil Surgeon Kapurthala HS Kahlon and District Health Officer Dr Kuljit Singh on Tuesday. They said the violators have been penalised with fine of Rs 4,590 in the town.
