Members of the Punjab Truck Operators Society today demanded strict checks on overloaded trucks and commercial use of tractors and trolleys in the city.
President of the society Happy Sandhu said, “Overloaded trucks have become a huge menace on roads and due to such rule-flouting truck operators, their business was getting badly affected. The operators of these trucks indulge in overloading to maximise their earnings, offer cheap logistics service and in the process , adversely affect their business.”
The union members also stressed that overloaded trucks and trolleys often lead to accidents. “If all states in the country have imposed proper checks on the overloading of trucks, why such stringent measures cannot be adopted in Punjab too?” the society members asked.
Happy Sandhu also said that at toll tax barriers, the overloaded trucks were being charged three to four times more than regular charges and were made to pass then only, which was not justified.
Moreover, he demanded that the government should give subsidies to the trucks used for transportation, as already 28 per cent GST had also been added as transportation cost and crude oil cost had also been raised.
