Punjab State games get off to a colourful start

The Punjab State Games for Boys (under-17) were flagged off by Padma Shree Pargat Singh, MLA, Jalandhar Cantt, at Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Burlton Park here today.

Over 2,400 players from various districts of Punjab took part in an impressive march-past, wearing sports gear sponsored by the Sports Department.

Earlier, Amrit Kaur Gill, Director, Sports, Punjab, welcomed the chief guest and other guests present on the occasion. She inspired the participants to keep themselves physically as well as mentally fit for the competitions.

Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Varinder Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, Surjit Singh Sandhu, Deputy Director, Sports, and Kartar Singh, Assistant Director, Sports, Punjab.

Athlete Mehakdeep Singh was the flag-bearer who led the march-past. The torch-bearing ceremony was performed by Amandeep Singh of gymnastics, Jatinderpal Singh of swimming, Manveer Singh of wrestling and Navtej Singh of athletics. Lakshay Sharma took the oath on behalf of all participants. A cultural programme was also presented on the occasion.

In today’s results of kabaddi preliminary rounds, Gurdaspur beat Muktsar 47-18, Tarn Taran defeated Mohali 45-31, Kapurthala defeated Pathankot 37-24 and Bathinda outplayed Mansa 37-34.

In wrestling 50 kg weight category, Hardeep Singh of Fazilka beat Vishal Kumar of Roop Nagar. In 55 kg, Akash of Jalandhar defeated Lovedeep of Sangrur. In 60 kg, Rupinder Singh of Gurdaspur beat Soufulla of Roop Nagar. In 66 kg, Lovepreet Singh of Ferozepur defeated Sahil Kumar of Mansa. In 74 kg, Amrinder Singh of Amritsar beat Satgurdeep of SBS Nagar 50-8.

In basketball, Patiala ousted Amritsar 50-8, Mansa outplayed Gurdaspur 43-26, Ferozepur beat Kapurthala 56-43, whereas Barnala defeated Roop Nagar 24-10.

In hockey, Kapurthala defeated Hoshiarpur 2-1, Ferozepur crushed Pathankot 4-0, Amritsar ousted Mansa 4-0, Fatehgarh Sahib ousted Barnala 2-0, Moga beat Tarntaran 2-0 and Roop Nagar defeated Faridkot 5-4 via the tie breaker.
