PWD declares nine buildings unsafe

Phagwara: The Public Works Department (PWD) has declared nine government buildings, including tehsil office building, in Phagwara unsafe.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has declared nine government buildings, including tehsil office building, in Phagwara unsafe.

Varinder Kumar, XEN, Phagwara PWD, while confirming it said SDO Jatinder Kumar had repeatedly written letters to Sub-Divisional Magistrate requesting to instruct officers and staff concerned to stop the use of unsafe buildings.

Phagwara SDM Jyoti Bala said she had forwarded the letter for required action to the Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner and the PWD had been asked to send fresh estimate for the construction of new building. 

Jyoti Bala said she had written seven letters to the tehsildar to shift their office in the SDM office complex during rainy season and even two rooms were ready for use in her complex.

The SDM said the tehsildar had expressed his helplessness as the staff of tehsil office were not ready to shift. Now the tehsildar wants to shift his office in Patwar Khana. However, the SDM has written to the Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala, for further instructions.

Meanwhile, Executive Engineer, PWD, Varinder Kumar, said eight more government buildings, including stadium and Government Middle School, Rampur Khalian, Government Primary School, Nasirabad, Government Elementary School, Bhularai, Government Senior Secondary School for Boys and Girls, Phagwara, had already been declared unsafe and required steps were taken to inform the authorities concerned to stop the use of these buildings. The XEN PWD had cautioned the administration, but nothing had been done in the past three years.
