Finally, five days after landing in India, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today. Modi welcomed his Canadian counterpart with a hug and also greeted his wife and three children, followed by a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapari Bhawan.

However, the cold reception given to Trudeau on his arrival to India has not gone well with the Sikh community which later decided to welcome Trudeau in their own style through social sites. The residents also accused Modi Government of snubbing Trudeau and not lending him a warm welcome on first day as he usually does with other foreign guests.

#welcomejustintrudeau was the campaign started by Punjabis while he visited Amritsar where through tweets, status and comments, punjabis across the state welcomed the Trudeau family and said, “Canada has truly been a land of opportunity for the Indian diaspora especially Sikhs. Our children and families are settled there and we are happy that they have a leader like Justin Trudeau,” said Yashpal Singh whose daughter lives in Canada.

Canada is the second home to Punjabis and we are quite satisfied our children are in a nation where there is no discrimination with Sikhs rather they are given equal freedom and rights like white people, he added.

Even Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann too using the same hash tag welcomed Trudeau through their tweets. Moreover, many residents also visited Amritsar on February 21 to have a glimpse of the Trudeau family.

“Every house in Punjab has one or the other family member settled in Canada, so it becomes the responsibility of the Centre and state government to establish good relations with Canada as it is the house to many Indian citizens,” said Poonam, sharing that India-Canada ties are important as 1.4 percent of the population resides in Canada.

Another resident Jaswinder Kaur accusing the Modi-led government said, “It has been seen that on many occasions PM Modi usually breaks protocol to go to the airport to receive important heads of governments personally and even hugs his foreign counterparts, as he did last month with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,

but no such welcome has been given to Trudeau. The Canadian PM has not even received any welcome message on Twitter from PM despite knowing that a large population of Sikhs resides in Canada,” she added.

Apart from posting a message on social sites to welcome his favourite politician, this 21 year old Manmeet Kaur who calls herself a big fan of Trudeau had also gone especially to Amritsar to meet PM Trudeau. Sharing her experience she said, “I was so excited since the day I heard Trudeau will be visiting Amritsar. I asked my father to take me to Amritsar as having a look of PM from even quite a far distance would be like a cherry on cake. I saw Trudeau and his family while they were having pictures near the Sarovar. He looks as handsome as we see him in pictures. I also posted message on my Twitter account, giving a warm welcome to him, as my brother who lives in Canada usually tells me about the cool nature and down to earth personality of Trudeau, who freely roams around the streets there without any security unlike our leaders,” she added.
