Jalandhar, March 22

A two-hour strike was organised by the roadways workers under the supervision of the bus stand union at 12 noon on Thursday.

Meanwhile, for the past many days, the city bus stand seems to be the major strike spot as earlier strikes were organised by the bus union heads against the privatisation of the Punjab Roadways, new Transport Act policies and now again the strike was held due to the non-fulfillment of demands proposed by the Punjab Roadways workers.

The union head said today that 15 days ago, a letter of demand was given to the Punjab Government regarding the implementation of the Supreme Court guidelines of equal wages for equal work, the Punjab and Haryana High Court orders of the cancellation of driving permit of 12,210 private buses and making temporary workers permanent. Along with that, the superintendent at the bus station said that demands were also raised for covering workers under the Punjab pension scheme, loan waiver of Punbus and DA to be given to all drivers and conductors.

The two-hour strike didn’t affect the passengers much as neither the Punjab Roadways buses nor private buses were stopped from running.
