Sharpen skills to compete at international level, says DC

The second edition of mega job fair, launched by the state government, under ‘Ghar Ghar Naukri’ scheme, kicked off today from DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology (DAVIET).

The fair will be held for four days in educational institutions of the city where 65 companies offer 3,000 jobs to the students from nine states of the country. Sanjeeda Beri, Deputy Director, Employment Generation, said around 65 companies including MNCs like UAE Exchange, Videocon, PNB Met life, Max life, Ralson India, Bajaj Allianz, Paytm and Just Dial offered jobs to the students.

On the first day of fair, as many as 1,800 students took part in the placement process, out of which, 535 were shortlisted by the various companies, she added.

Monica, a PGDCA student, said she had applied with five companies but she failed to get a turn today. “There was so much rush that I could not manage a chance anywhere today.”

Aradhna, a teacher from a Kartarpur-based college, said she had come along with 15 girls, all of whom had appeared for interviews and submitted their resume. “We have been asked to wait for a response. Most companies had offererd for marketing jobs, those, too, in Delhi and the girls were unwilling to apply for those.”

While inaugurating the fair, Varinder Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, said the biggest dilemma faced by the students was to choose the career after Class X or XII. However, he said these kind of job fairs would definitely provide guidance to the students for their better future.

Remembering his college days, Sharma said that the biggest cause of worry for students was to get placement during their study and the fair would provide common platform to the companies and students, which would be a win-win situation for industrial units and students.

Urging the students to sharpen their skills to compete at global level, he said that there was no alternative to the hard work and keeping in view their productive time the students must grab the opportunities with both hands.He also asked the students for maximum use of mobile app launched to register the students for the fair.

The state government has already removed the time line for registration and established special help desks at the job fair sites.

Dr Manoj Kumar, Principal DAVIET, Capt Inderjeet Singh Dhami, Assistant Director Youth Services, among others,were also present on the occasion.
