Thieves target temples in Phagwara

PHAGWARA: As many as three incidents of theft at religious shrines have been reported in the last fortnight in Phagwara.

As many as three incidents of theft at religious shrines have been reported in the last fortnight in Phagwara.

Thieves struck at Shri Shiv Mandir shrine on Kherra Road on Thursday night. They broke open the golaks and decamped with cash estimated to be around Rs 15,000.

The police have registered a case. In the first theft, golaks of Shri Hanuman Garrhi Temple were found broken on April 8. Rs 25,000 in cash was stolen but no arrests have been made so far. Just four days later, thieves struck at Shri Geeta Mandir, near the Police Colony in Model Town on the night of April 12.

They decamped with more than Rs 20,000 in cash. Advocate CR Gautam of the temple managing committee, in a complaint filed with the police, said the golak was found to be broken at the temple. The thieves also took away an LED and a mobile phone from the office of the caretaker after snapping the power supply to the CCTV cameras located in the temple. The CCTV cameras were also found damaged. A case has been registered in this regard.

Seven days after this incident, the Shiva Temple at Kherra Road was targeted by the criminals, creating terror in the city.

In another theft incident, burglars struck at the house of Joginder Kumar in Tibbi locality and took away a laptop,gold chain and Rs 30,000 in cash. The burglars entered the house after breaking open the locks and ransacked the house. A case has been registered by the police in this connection.
