Sunday’s main story in every newspaper, on every news portal and TV shook the nation, which read that a Yamunanagar school principal had been shot dead by a Class XII boy.

The section most affected by this news is the teaching community that has been left thinking the relationship between a student and a teacher.

The Tribune talked to principals, students and parents in this regard. They all believed that the relationship of the “guru” and “shishya”, which used to be considered the most pious one in the world, has taken a beating with this incident.

Jatinder Singh, principal of MGN School in the Urban Estate, said whatever may be the reason, he does not support the child doing it. “The whole incident is disgusting; the society has become sick,” the principal said, expressing his anger. Singh said students in the age group of 17 and 18 have gone out of control and to the top of it, the parental control is zero. He said many parents approach him, showing concern about their children not listening to them. “When I come to know that the students are misbehaving in my school, I personally counsel them. I have a counsellor in the school,” he said. He added that the parents sometime blindly defend their children, which deteriorates the situation.

Raman Kant,  principal of Government Senior Secondary School Malsian

“Media and television are primarily responsible for these shocking and shameful incidents.”

The principal, who has been into the teaching line for the past 35 years, said it was not understandable how a minor incident could lead to such hate in the student. “The violent shows that are being shown on the television are to be blamed first. What are we showing to our youth; the shows like crime patrol and ‘Saavdhan India’ have only maligned the thinking of the youngsters,” he said, expressing his concern. “This has reminded me of incidents that have happened in the USA. Students had reportedly opened fire at teachers. This is the Western impact on minds of students here,” the principal added. He also said that it was important for the government to check the shows that are being shown on television. “It is the duty of the government to make sure that the youth is learning good moral values from the television.”

Rashmi Vij, principal of Police DAV Public School

“The incident that has happened is scary for the teaching community. Parental attitudes towards teachers, principals and schools are actually deteriorating with each coming day.”

“School is an age-old institution that is based only on respect and regard, and you cannot learn from somebody for whom you have no regard. It seems that the institutions have collapsed,” she said, adding that the institutions were losing their value among students and parents who were treating these as commercial institutes.

“Parents themselves are now short-tempered and unfortunately, the children are also imbibing the same values,” she said. Parents have even come to me, saying their wards ill-treat them, but added it happens only when the parents pamper their children.

“I have also come across an incident, where a male teacher tried to stop a student and his hands were held by the latter.”

Khushdeep Kaur of Government Senior Secondary School Adarsh Nagar

“There was not a single reason behind such incidents, but for a student to take such a step is something that requires great attention.”

Khushdeep said although she was the principal of a girls’ school, she said for the past few years there was a change in the behaviour of girls towards teachers and principals.

“Now many girls do not respect their teachers. The environment has changed, and TV has impacted students a lot.” Apart from principals, parents, students of the city-based schools said they often faced similar situations on a daily basis. The parents as well students were also asked about the factors responsible for growing aggression amongst teenagers and what forces them to take such extreme step of murdering others or committing suicides.

Ekta, an architect

Blaming social media for all such incidents, Ekta said, “Students these days are becoming so much egoistic that they have no patience or tolerance to bear anything against them. Less interaction with parents also contributes in making a child take wrong decisions and get into bad company. In this incident, the parents of the student are completely responsible as they failed to give moral values to their child and made him realise the value of life.

Priyanka, student of GNDU College

Stressing the need of motivating students to develop patience and share their feelings with parents, Priyanka said, “Parents play a major role in a student’s life, as what they learn at home gets reflected in the outside world. Students are becoming aggressive, as these days there is no control of parents over students and they are free to do anything. Accepting every single wish of their child irrespective of knowing its consequences is not good. Parents should keep an eye on every activity of the child and should spend maximum time with them.

Surinder Saini, working with a child helpline

“Moral education is completely lacking in students. In the race to get more marks and secure100 per cent marks, they are becoming machines with no respect and feelings inside. The parents, who are keeping weapons at home for their safety and defence, should not expose these to students who may make wrong use of these anytime. The boy deserves strict punishment under the Juvenile Act so that in future whosoever makes such attempts remembers him. Also, parents need to learn a lesson that they need to spend quality time with their children and do not let children stick to their phones all the time.

Deepak Sharma, parent of a Class XII girl

“Being a parent, I completely understand my responsibility and so do other parents. But there are a few parents who revolt at every point, justifying their children even if they are wrong. All such things instigate students and make them more egoistic. They start feeling it’s me and only me. This incident is an eye opener for parents that they need to be strict with their children and need to be aware of every activity of their child.

Ritu Gulati, a housewife

Being the wife of a man who is serving as principal in GNDU College, Ritu Gulati said, “Teachers are the second parents of a child, even if they scold them, it’s for a reason and their good. They want their students to rise and achieve great things. So it is their job to punish or adopt ways which might not seem good to parents and children but are beneficial to enhance students’ progress. The incident has shocked the nation and teaching fraternity is really disturbed. Parents should get a lesson from this and make sure their children are in good company and learn good moral values.

Nehal, class XII student of Police DAV School

As our board exams are approaching, we are going through a lot of stress. We hardly get time for our meals. May be, the student who had taken this severe step might be under some stress or facing some family issues, and in a rage shot the principal. In today’s scenario, students and parents are busy in their own work and have no time for each other. This is actually widening the gap between them. As a student, I feel what bond we share with our friends we are not able to share with our parents. But whatever has happened is very saddening as no one has the right to kill anyone, especially a teacher who had reprimanded the student for his good.
