Jalandhar, April 26

Around five youths, in their late twenties, visited a filling station in the Rama mandi area and fired at the staff when asked to pay money.

Area SHO Jeevan Singh said the youths came on two motorcycles and got petrol filled for Rs 500 in each of the bike.

Later, they tried to escape from the spot, but were confronted by the pump staff. While one staff member held one of the pillion riders, the other went ahead and took out the keys of a motorcycle.

The CCTV footage retrieved from the spot revealed that the youths were seemingly perturbed over the sudden confrontation and took out sharp-edged weapons and one of them even took out a country-made pistol.

While one of the assailants repeatedly attacked a pump employee, the other youth fired two bullets at an employee. They later ran away.

A case pertaining to the incident was lodged in the Rama mandi police station.

Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner said the huge amount of country-made weapons and even the licensed ones were posing a serious threat to the civic society.

“In the last one year, I have restrained the issuance of licensed weapons to only ex-servicemen and also wards of the police or trained people. I am rarely issuing any weapon to a youth of less than 40 years. The number of both legal and illegal weapons compared to the city population is worrisome,” said Sinha.
