SRINAGAR: Two militants were killed in a gunfight in the Handwara forest in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, Army said on Thursday.

Two militants were killed in a gunfight in the Handwara forest in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, Army said on Thursday.

The gunfight erupted on Wednesday night when a patrolling party of the Army was fired upon by militants at Qaziabad Handwara forest area, 100 km from here.

“The fire was retaliated and a gunfight triggered in the area. The exchange of fire continued for some time. During search operations on Thursday morning the bodies of two militants were recovered,” a defence official said.

The identity of the slain militants could not be established immediately.

The combing of the forest area is in progress.

The Army has also recovered arms and ammunition from the gunfight site.
