Srinagar: The police on Monday foiled Awami Ittehad Party leader and Independent MLA Engineer Rasheed's proposed protest march outside the office of the DIG, south Kashmir, against the recent civilian killings in Kulgam.



Srinagar: The police on Monday foiled Awami Ittehad Party leader and Independent MLA Engineer Rasheed's proposed protest march outside the office of the DIG, south Kashmir, against the recent civilian killings in Kulgam. The party had planned a day-long sit-in outside the DIG's office in Anantnag against what it called "martial law" in south Kashmir. However, a large contingent of the police detained Rasheed on the outskirts of Pampore when he was on way to Anantnag, party spokesman Advocate Abdul Maajid Banday said. He said the legislator was later detained at the Panth Chowk police station. TNS

Youth group to honour artists, sportspersons   

Srinagar: A youth group, 'The Blue Canvas', will give away 'Eminence Awards' to recognise talent in different fields and encourage young artists, writers, sportspersons and entrepreneurs of the Valley. "Nominations are now open in various categories of hero, talent and corporate awards. Eminence Awards is a step towards recognising and acknowledging our own people and their ventures. It will be marked as the biggest award show in the history of Kashmir. People can nominate artists, athletes and writers, etc in the talent category; social workers and activists, etc in the heroes category; and business units, hotels, restaurants, cafes, start-ups, tourist destinations, manufacturing industries, food and beverage industries, houseboats in the corporate category," said Aqif Majid, an engineering student, who founded The Blue Canvas. Giving details of the events held by the group in the past, Aqif said: "We started Kashmir's first online magazine 'PhantomThoughts' for artists and writers and it became a trendsetter for writing platforms since then. We have organised events like writers' quest, school of the year and many more. School of the year was the biggest-ever talent hunt across all schools of the Valley held in 2017. We have also powered to help events like talk for change youth summit and Kashmir spring festival." TNS

Excellence award for cluster varsity CoE 

Jammu: Syed Zaheer Abbas Hashmi, Controller of Examination (CoE), Cluster University of Jammu, was on Sunday awarded a gold medal and a certificate of excellence for his outstanding achievement and remarkable role in the field of education. He was awarded at the Asia Pacific Achievers’ Summit on ‘Globalisation of economic growth and social development’ at Tashkent in Uzbekistan. Sipra Ghosh, Ambassador of the Indian Embassy at Tashkent presented him the award. Hashmi hails from Ghat village of Doda district. He has served as the principal of Degree Colleges at Doda and Bhaderwah and is a renowned environmentalist of the area. TNS

Workshop on plaster techniques held

Jammu: A workshop on plaster techniques was organised by the Indian Orthopaedics Association, J&K Orthopaedics Association and the department of orthopaedics of Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Jammu. About 100 orthopaedic surgeons and postgraduates from all over the state attended the workshop. Experts said the application of plastering techniques for the treatment of fractures had become a forgotten art and most of the orthopaedicians were now resorting to surgery to treat such cases. The Indian Orthopaedics Association will conduct five or six workshops in a year across India. TNS

Cardiology camp 

Jammu A free cardiology camp was organised with Bhagawaan Gopinath Trust at its ashram. Dr Ashok Bakaya, a renowned cardiologist, conducted the camp in which 50 patients were examined. Dr Bakaya was assisted by a team from Cipla India Ltd. Free medicines were distributed among the patients. TNS

Summer training 

Jammu A summer training workshop titled ‘Building scientific temper in teachers and practical aspects of science’ started at MV International School. Resource person educationist Champa Banerjee conducted hands-on activities for science and maths teachers. “It was an eye-opener and an inspiring workshop,” stated a press statement. TNS

Man arrested with charas 

Kathua: The police have arrested a drug peddler in Basohli of Kathua district and seized 600 gm of charas from his possession. The accused has been identified as Mohd Ashpak of Bani. “Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a naka at Madrakhi morh on the Basohli-Bani road and stopped a person who was carrying a bag. During the search, 600 gm of charas was found in his possession,” the police said.  — TNS
