Three suspension bridges in Kargil town have been damaged due to the floods in the Wakha river.

An artificial lake was formed due to the blockage of the river at Kapila Pashkum by dumping of debris during construction and expansion of the Kargil-Leh road by Vijayak, a project of the Border roads Organisation.

The recent snowfall in Kargil has increased the water level in the river.

The flood has also damaged various irrigation canals and standing crop from Pashkum to Poyen as the water level in the river has increased with the increase in temperature.

Meanwhile, Col P Kumar, Commander, Border Road Task Force, said due to recent heavy snowfall, there was an avalanche near Shaitan Nullah, Gumri, which blocked the road from Drass to Zero Point, Gumri.

He said Project Vijayak was clearing the road from both sides and hoped to clear it by Monday evening. He said the rest of the road has been widened for passing of two vehicles at a time.

Vijayak is also clearing landslides along the Kargil-Drass road caused by recent heavy snowfall. — TNS
