4,157 booked in 2,009 domestic violence cases in five years

JAMMU: The state has registered 2,009 cases and booked 4,157 persons under the Jammu and Kashmir Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2010, in the last five years.

The state has registered 2,009 cases and booked 4,157 persons under the Jammu and Kashmir Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2010, in the last five years.

In a written reply to a question by MLA Yasir Reshi, Minister for Social Welfare Bali Bhagat said in order to curb the menace of domestic violence, the government had enacted the Jammu and Kashmir Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2010, and the Jammu and Kashmir Protection of Women from Domestic Rules 2011 thereto.

As per details given to the Assembly, Jammu district has registered the highest number of 455 domestic violence cases and 1,247 people have been booked.

Similarly, the summer capital of the state Srinagar has registered 255 cases for which 439 persons have been arrested in the last five years.

While giving district-wise details, minister said Samba had registered 38 cases and booked 103 persons, Kathua registered 82 and booked 177 persons.

Poonch registered 100 cases and booked 221 persons, Rajouri registered 225 cases and booked 546 persons, Reasi registered 33 cases and booked 60 persons.

Udhampur registered 98 cases and 204 persons were booked, Doda registered 325 cases and booked 551 persons, Kishtwar registered 60 cases and 178 persons were booked.

Ramban district registered 38 cases and booked 75 persons for domestic violence in the last five years.

In the Kashmir region, Budgam has registered 17 cases and booked 23 persons, Pulwama registered 17 cases and booked 44 person, Kulgam registered four cases and booked five persons.

Kupwara registered 28 cases and booked 32 persons, Ganderbal registered 12 cases and booked 44 persons, Anantnag registered 29 cases and booked 72 persons.

Baramulla registered 71 cases and booked 91 persons, Bandipora registered 12 cases and booked 26 person. Shopian registered six cases and booked 15persons.

Four domestic violence cases were registered in the remote Ladakh region in the last five years and four persons were booked in this regard.
